Introduction
The
idea of writing this short biography on Patrick Depailler originates
from a deep-rooted admiration, ever since I first began to follow
his racing career in 1974. Patrick had all the qualities of
a true racing driver and sportsman and it was exactly these
characteristics that impressed me so much as a young enthusiast
at the time. He was extremely quick, very courageous, determined
and most of all a humble man. In many ways his image was also
the antithesis of the archetypical racing driver of the time.
Fame and fortune were never the reasons why he competed. His
passion for racing and the opportunity to be behind the wheel
of a racing car was his sole reward.
I
further believe that a proper biography can only be written
with the aid of family and friends of that particular person.
This was unfortunately not possible, but to compensate for it
I have, nevertheless, tried to give an accurate review of Patrick's
life with the aid of several books and magazines that I have
collected, the contributions from fellow enthusiasts and also
from personal notes that I have made over the years. Apologies,
though, for any mistakes - factual or otherwise that may have
occurred in compiling this.
I
trust that everyone that takes the time to read this, will get
a better insight into the life of one of the world's most versatile
and accomplished racing drivers.
